Known Issues and Limitations¶

This section describes known issues and limitations when running VSI OpenVMS x86-64 V9.2-3 or higher as a guest operating system on VMware ESXi virtual machines.

Changing Settings of a Running Virtual Machine May Cause a Hang¶

Even if the hypervisor appears to allow it, do not change the configuration of a VSI OpenVMS virtual machine while it is running, as this may cause it to hang. Before editing any VM settings, make sure to power off the virtual machine.

Time of Day May Not Be Maintained Correctly in Virtual Machine Environments¶

VSI OpenVMS x86-64 V9.2-3 and earlier may not maintain the time of day correctly in virtual machine environments after certain events, such as booting or suspending a virtual machine and other similar events (depending on the virtual machine host).

To keep the time of day accurate in such cases, use the SET TIME command. If this does not resolve the problem, enter the following command from the SYSTEM account:

$ @SYS$MANAGER:UTC$SET_TIME.COM

Starting with the E9.2-4 release of VSI OpenVMS x86-64, the use of VM Tools services resolves this issue. Refer to the Synchronizing Time Between an OpenVMS Virtual Machine and a Host System section for details.

Possible Issues with VMware Virtual Machines¶

• Enabling EFI mode before finishing the virtual machine creation will require recreating it from scratch to avoid errors when adding SCSI controllers.

• Virtual machines created in VMware ESXi hypervisors may not operate as intended until you manually set the parameters listed in Additional Configuration Steps.

  Depending on your specific configuration, there may be cases where you may not need to set one or more of those parameters.
